THE POSITION
Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled street maintenance, repair, and construction duties involving City streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, storm drains, culverts, signs, traffic control, trees, snow removal and related infrastructure. Responsibilities include repairing asphalt and concrete surfaces, installing and maintaining traffic signs and roadway markings, performing traffic control, removing debris from public roadways and walkways, and identifying and correcting safety hazards. This position also performs snow plowing, berm reduction, cindering, and other snow removal activities to help keep City streets, parking lots, and pedestrian areas safe during winter conditions. Incumbents operate and maintain a variety of hand tools, power tools, trucks, loaders, backhoes, snow plows, and other maintenance equipment while assisting with community events and supporting other Public Works maintenance activities as needed. A successful candidate in this position will be required to work nights , weekends, and holidays, as well as respond to after-hours emergency call-outs and perform routine standby duties.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in street maintenance, construction, repair, and snow removal activities. This candidate should have the ability to perform asphalt and concrete repairs, assist with traffic control operations, safely operate a
variety of light and heavy duty maintenance equipment and tools, and work effectively in a physically demanding outdoor environment throughout all seasons.
A successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, customer service, teamwork, and public service. They should be able to follow written and verbal instructions, communicate effectively with coworkers and the public, troubleshoot maintenance issues, and work both independently and collaboratively. The ideal candidate will be dependable, adaptable, and capable of performing heavy physical labor while maintaining a positive attitude and a high level of professionalism.
QUALIFICATIONS (The following are the minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification.)
Education/Experience: A High School Diploma or equivalent and at least one (1) year experience in public works related construction and street maintenance work is required.
Physical ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. This position requires both indoor and outdoor work; conditions vary from hot to extremely cold temperatures. Requires considerable customer service provided in a professional and effective manner.
License/Certificate: Possession of a valid class B California driver license (with a relevant endorsement), is required.

Retirement: The City is a member of the San Bernardino County Employees’ Retirement Association (SBCERA) which is reciprocal with CalPERS. The City’s retirement formula is 2% @ 55 with prior qualifying public service or effective January 1, 2013 the formula is 2.5% @ 67 for new participants.
