Water Plant Maintenance Technician - Electrical Specialty

Job Description

We are looking for a technical problem solver Journeyman Electrician who will be responsible for the general operation, maintenance, and installation of water treatment plant equipment and systems in the Water Production department. This includes pumps, valves, air compressors, chemical feeders, and other typical water treatment plant equipment and systems. Responsible for buildings, structures, plumbing, mechanical, and other support-related equipment. This role works alone and in teams.


Technical Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of all, but not limited to, the following:
    • Maintenance and Installation of mechanical systems such as those found in the OUC water treatment plants.
    • Hand tools and advanced maintenance skills.
  • Ability to:
    • Ability to work stand-by duty on a rotating basis.
    • Ability to work in confined spaces such as underground vaults.
    • Ability to work at substantial heights, such as overhead water storage tanks.
    • Training in hazardous material handling is desirable, especially concerning ozone, chlorine, caustic soda, hydrofluosilicic acid, and liquid oxygen.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and unsupervised when necessary.
    • Demonstrated communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Demonstrated ability to use a personal computer.

Education/Certification/Years of Experience Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Equivalent trade school training or formal college education or military training outlined below is required:
    • Completion of trade school formal training (two (2) years minimum) with an emphasis in mechanical systems (or)
    • Associate degree in engineering [with an emphasis in mechanical, (or)
    • 1,000 hours of military training in mechanical systems.
  • A minimum of 2 years of work experience in a related maintenance specialty is required. Equivalent other directly related maintenance experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated good safety record, including a driver's license per the current OUC policy.
  • Must possess a valid Class C Water Plant Operator's License Issued by the State of Florida at the start date or obtain it within 12 months of employment.
  • Must possess a Hazardous Materials Technician Level HAZWOPER Certification at the start date or obtain it within 12 months of employment.

Working Conditions:

This job will involve frequent exposure to chemicals and excessive noise. This job also involves regular exposure to extreme weather conditions and insects. This job may involve occasional exposure to noxious fumes and heights/confined areas. To perform the required duties, the Technician may be assigned an OUC vehicle on an eight-hour basis and required, on short notice, to work extended hours when needed, including nights, weekends, and all holidays under potentially adverse conditions.

Physical Requirements:

This job consists of persistent standing, lifting to twenty (20) lbs, bending/stooping, and reaching overhead. This job involves frequent walking, lifting to forty (40) lbs, pushing, pulling, and digging. This job consists of occasional writing, sitting, raising over 50 (50+) lbs, kneeling, and crawling, and may involve occasional monitoring/operating cranes/hoists. This job consists of frequent monitoring or operating vehicles such as pickup trucks/vans, shop tools (both hand and power worked), and testing equipment.

Must be medically qualified to conduct hazmat emergency response, including donning and using an SCBA with a Level A Chemical Suit.
