Description

The City of Wentzville is seeking a motivated Wastewater Operator I - Collections to join our Utilities team. This position plays an important role in protecting public health and the environment by assisting with the daily operation, maintenance, and repair of the City's wastewater treatment plant and collection system.

What You'll Do

As a Wastewater Operator I, you'll assist with the operation and maintenance of the City's wastewater treatment plant and collections system while working alongside an experienced team. Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with the daily operations of the City's wastewater treatment plant and collections system.
  • Perform routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs on wastewater collection facilities and equipment.
  • Assist with jetting sanitary sewer lines, TV camera inspections, and collection system repairs.
  • Operate City vehicles, heavy equipment, and specialized tools in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and housekeeping throughout treatment facilities and grounds.
  • Monitor system performance and report maintenance needs or operational concerns.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance, and operational activities.
  • Support emergency response efforts during wastewater system failures, weather events, and other emergencies.
  • Provide courteous, professional service to coworkers, residents, contractors, and the public.

Working Conditions

This position requires working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and performing physically demanding work, including lifting, climbing, bending, and entering confined spaces in accordance with safety procedures.

Employees participate in an on-call rotation for after-hours emergencies and must be able to respond within 30 minutes when on call. Operators are also expected to assist with 24-hour winter storm operations as needed.

Qualifications

Job Qualifications  Education, experience, and training that are required or desirable in order to effectively perform the job at the time of hire. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Additional requirements and/or substitutions may be requested and require the approval of HR.

  • Minimum of one year of experience in the maintenance and repair of wastewater collection facilities and equipment or other relevant experience is required. 
  • Job-relevant certification/license, vocational/technical program completion, or completion of apprenticeship preferred.
  • Certification Wastewater DNR Operator Class D preferred, or the ability to obtain within 180 days of employment required.
  • Valid Class A CDL with airbrakes and tanker endorsement preferred, or the ability to obtain within 180 days of employment required. 
  • Wastewater Collections D license (MWEA) preferred.
  • Prior heavy equipment operating experience desired.
  • Valid drivers license is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities  May be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those knowledge, skills, and abilities commonly associated with this position.

  • Knowledge of the functions of the wastewater collection systems, related state and federal regulations, lift station equipment, and sewer line maintenance and repairs.
  • Ability to provide exceptional service to internal and external customers. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with supervisors, co-workers, and customers by telephone, in writing, and in person.
  • Ability to use good judgment and think rationally in difficult or stressful situations.
  • Ability to develop goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work, as well as concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work under direct supervision and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and systems to accomplish tasks. 
  • Basic knowledge of the use of general computer programs and applications, including email and mobile apps
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to safely drive vehicles used to transport materials, tools and equipment
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential job duty. The job requires being reliable, responsible and dependable.

Salary/Compensation: $28.00 - $29.60 per hour
