Manual HBM Machinist (Horizontal Boring Mill)
Position Summary
The Manual HBM Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating manual horizontal boring mills to machine large, complex components to precise tolerances. This role requires a strong understanding of machining processes, blueprint interpretation, and the ability to work independently to produce high-quality parts in a safe and efficient manner.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate manual horizontal boring mills (HBM) to machine large-scale metal components
- Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications to determine machining requirements
- Perform layout, alignment, and precision measurement of workpieces prior to machining
- Select appropriate tooling, speeds, feeds, and cutting methods for various materials
- Conduct roughing and finishing operations to achieve specified tolerances and surface finishes
- Measure and inspect completed parts using precision instruments (micrometers, bore gauges, indicators, etc.)
- Adjust machine controls or tooling as needed to maintain accuracy and quality standards
- Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting of machining equipment
- Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area
- Document production activities and report any issues or deviations
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or apprenticeship preferred
- 3+ years of experience operating manual horizontal boring mills or similar large manual machining equipment
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
- Proficient in the use of precision measurement tools
- Solid understanding of machining principles, materials, and cutting techniques
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience machining large forgings
- Knowledge of rigging and material handling for heavy workpieces
- Familiarity with shop math and geometric tolerancing (GD&T)
- Experience in a job shop or heavy industrial environment
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift and move materials up to 50 lbs (with assistance when required)
- Frequent bending, reaching, and handling of tools and materials
- Comfortable working in a manufacturing/shop environment
Work Environment
- Industrial machine shop setting
- Exposure to noise, metal chips, oils/coolants, and heavy equipment
- Appropriate PPE (eye protection, steel-toe boots, etc.) required
