Lead HVAC Technician

Job Description

Job Description

Job Description

Commercial Repair, Inc. manages 26 commercial buildings across the Huntsville area, and we're launching an in-house HVAC department. We're looking for a licensed HVAC professional to help us build it from the ground up — working closely with our Facility Manager to handle service calls directly, decide when to bring in outside vendors, and shape how the department runs. This is a ground-floor opportunity with long-term leverage. You'll have direct input on equipment, processes, vendor relationships, and eventually the team you help build.

Why This Role Is Different

  • Build it from the ground up. We're launching this department and need a licensed professional to anchor it. You'll have real leverage, real authority, and real ownership over how it runs.
  • You're the expert, not a number on a dispatch board. You'll lead the HVAC operation — not get added to the bottom of a rotating on-call list.
  • Stable, predictable work. 26 commercial buildings under long-term management means consistent workload — no chasing one-off residential calls or feast-or-famine cycles.
  • Real input on how the department is built. Equipment preferences, vendor relationships, preventive maintenance programs — you'll have a seat at the table.
  • Clear growth path. As the HVAC division scales, this role grows with it — into a Department Lead or Service Manager position.
  • Backed by a full facility operations team. You focus on HVAC; we handle the admin, scheduling support, and tenant coordination.

What You'll Do

  • Work closely with our Facility Manager to handle HVAC service calls across our commercial portfolio — diagnosing issues, performing repairs, and executing preventive maintenance on rooftop units, split systems, VRF/VRV, chillers, and light commercial equipment.
  • Make the call on in-house vs. outsource. For each work order, you'll assess whether it's a job we handle internally or one we route to an outside vendor based on scope, equipment, and timing.
  • Coordinate with outside HVAC vendors and subcontractors when jobs require specialized equipment, crane work, or after-hours manpower — including vetting bids, reviewing scopes, and quality-checking completed work.
  • Perform seasonal PMs and help build a preventive maintenance program that reduces emergency calls and extends equipment life.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, refrigeration, and controls issues; make the call on repair vs. replace and communicate clearly with the Facility Manager and property managers.
  • Maintain accurate service records, equipment logs, and refrigerant tracking in compliance with EPA regulations.
  • Respond to after-hours emergency calls as needed (on-call pay and overtime included).
  • Help us grow the department — as workload expands, you'll have input on hiring additional techs and shaping how the team runs.

What We're Looking For

  • Active Alabama HVAC Certification from the State of Alabama Board of Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Contractors.
  • Active EPA Section 608 Universal certification.
  • 5+ years of hands-on commercial HVAC experience (light commercial and rooftop equipment are our bread and butter).
  • Strong diagnostic skills — you can walk onto a unit, read the symptoms, and find the root cause without throwing parts at it.
  • Strong communicator who works well with a team — you'll partner daily with the Facility Manager and interact regularly with property managers and tenants.
  • Clean driving record and the ability to pass a background check.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor — you'll be interacting with commercial tenants and their customers regularly.

Bonus Points For

  • Experience with building automation systems (BAS), controls, or smart thermostats at scale.
  • NATE certification, manufacturer certifications (Trane, Carrier, Daikin, Mitsubishi), or boiler/chiller experience.
  • Prior experience leading a crew or running a service route independently.
  • Familiarity with AppFolio, ServiceTitan, or similar work order platforms.

Schedule

Monday–Friday, regular business hours. After-hours emergency calls may come up occasionally and are compensated with on-call pay and overtime — but this isn't a role where you're chasing calls every night or every weekend. We respect your time outside of work.

Compensation & Benefits

We're competing for top talent, and we pay like it.

  • Pay: $30–$50/hour based on experience and certifications. Exceptional candidates can negotiate above that range.
  • Company vehicle + fuel card — no wear and tear on your personal truck.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match — we invest in your long-term future, not just this paycheck.
  • Paid time off and paid holidays.
  • Paid training and certifications — we'll cover EPA renewals, manufacturer schools, NATE, and other continuing education.
  • Company-provided tools, uniforms, and PPE — we set you up with what you need to do the job.
  • On-call pay and overtime for after-hours emergency service.

Who We Are

Commercial Repair, Inc. is a Huntsville-based facility services company supporting a growing portfolio of 26 commercial buildings. Our work spans facility repairs, property operations, tenant services, and vendor coordination. We're building an in-house HVAC department because we believe the best service comes from people who know the buildings, know the tenants, and take pride in the outcome — not rotating third-party vendors.

If you want to be a name, not a number, and have real ownership over how a department runs, we want to talk.
