Job Description — Join a 5th generation, family-owned, Wisconsin-based regional construction contractor specializing in mass excavation, underground utility installation and repair, and aggregate production services. James Peterson Sons serves Public Works, DOT, and private commercial and residential infrastructure markets across Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We take pride in a long history of safe, reliable work and strong community relationships.

We are recruiting an experienced excavator/backhoe operator to become part of our skilled crews. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience on heavy/highway or utility projects, be safety-focused, dependable, and able to collaborate effectively with other crew members. This is a field-based role with travel between job sites throughout our service area.

Key Responsibilities

• Safely operate large excavators, backhoes and related heavy equipment to complete excavation, trenching and utility work.
• Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting of equipment on site to ensure safe operation and project continuity.
• Follow project plans, grade stakes and direction from foremen and supervisors to complete work to specifications.
• Assist with other construction tasks as needed, including traffic control, material handling and site cleanup.
• Adhere to all safety policies, wear required PPE and participate in safety meetings.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in underground utility construction or heavy/highway excavation operations.
• Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record; ability to travel to various sites throughout Wisconsin and the UP of Michigan.
• Physical ability to meet the demands of the role including long periods of standing/walking and lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying heavy objects.
• Strong commitment to working safely under varying weather and job site conditions.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.
