Suburban News Reporter

Job Description

Be the Voice of Wichita’s Suburbs: Audience-Focused Reporter

The Wichita Eagle, part of McClatchy’s innovative, digitally driven network, is seeking a self-starting, audience-obsessed reporter to cover Wichita’s vibrant and growing suburbs. You’ll deliver fast, need-to-know stories that matter most to suburban readers—covering everything from development and education to safety, politics, and new places to eat or do business.

This role is perfect for a resourceful journalist who thrives on building loyal audiences through consistent, high-impact storytelling. You’ll listen deeply to your community, use digital engagement tools, and experiment with formats like explainers, fact checks, and video. Front-facing video experience is a plus, as you’ll be the face of our suburban coverage.

At McClatchy, we blend trusted journalism with the power of AI and data-driven insights—augmenting your reporting, never replacing it. You’ll leverage technology to amplify your reach, surface new story ideas, and focus on deeply reported work.

What you’ll bring:

  • 1–3 years of reporting experience (degree or equivalent)

  • Strong news judgment, ethics, and writing/reporting skills

  • Curiosity, energy, and digital fluency

  • Commitment to collaboration and community engagement

Join The Wichita Eagle and McClatchy—where every audience matters, every signal counts, and your journalism makes a difference. Enjoy a supportive, innovative culture and a comprehensive benefits package.

Apply with your cover letter, resume, and 4–6 work samples.
