Job Description

Position: Registered Nurse (RN)      

Program: Health Office

Full-time: 35 Hours

Non-exempt, hourly

Schedule: Weekdays, school, and afternoon/evening hours. May require weekends and holidays, as assigned. 

Calendar:  12 Month

Qualifications - Required:    

  • Current New York State RN license that adheres to guidelines within the NYS Nurse Practice Act.
  • Valid CPR certification.

Qualifications - Desired:

  • BSN degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ nursing experience is preferred.
  • Experience working with children and/or adolescents in a residential setting is desired.

Reports to: Director of Health Services (DHS)        

Other Sources of Work Direction: Senior RN

Overview of Position: The RN is responsible for the delivery and oversight of health care needs of all LaSalle students. Decisions and responsibility for the care of the students are met by the RN, in consultation with other ancillary providers and clinicians as indicated.

General Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Providing nursing care to male adolescents in a residential setting.
  • Providing immediate first aid and triage and refer as needed for appropriate treatment.
  • Demonstrates ability to delegate assignments to other team members.
  • Administer immunizations as per LaSalle protocol and in accordance with NYS Health Laws.
  • Act as community liaison with outside medical providers and advocate for timely delivery of health care.
  • Assist other agency team members in providing medical, emotional, and psychological support to students in various stages of crisis.
  • Administer all medications and perform all treatments ordered by MD in a timely and diligent manner.
  • Document on appropriate records all pertinent information.
  • Assess students and use professional nursing judgment in the treatment of students and refer appropriately as needed.
  • Prepare required medical reports and other documents related to the health care of the students.
  • Attend staff meetings, care conferences, and professional development, as assigned.
  • Communicate pertinent medical information to members of the nursing team to ensure continuity of care.
  • Develop and deliver health and medical education to youth, families and staff as indicated/ assigned.
  • Must demonstrate flexibility in scheduling in the event of emergencies, or in times of increased workload which may include coverage of alternate shifts.
  • Able to work in conjunction with other disciplines to contribute to the overall care of the students at LSS.

Annual Training Requirements: CPR, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention, all others as required by LSS and relevant policy.             

Other Annual Requirements: Physical, Maintenance of profession license.

Necessary Job Skills:

  • Must possess excellent assessment skills.
  • Must have the ability to triage medical emergencies.
  • Demonstrate basic skills in performing nursing procedures.
  • Must be knowledgeable regarding medication management.
  • Possess and utilize effective communication skills.
  • Must have basic computer knowledge, including use of electronic medical record, and familiarity with medical billing.
  • Must have the ability to manage time and to work in a calm, efficient manner.
  • Must be able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and must possess the ability to triage as assessment indicates.
  • Able to demonstrate support of the agency’s mission and LSS philosophy.
