Job Description JOB PURPOSE or SUMMARY: HED is continuously looking at ways to improve product quality and speed to market. Automated software testing is a pain point we are excited to solve. We’re looking for someone with the passion and experience to improve HED’s automated testing infrastructure and systems. What does this mean? Imagine testing a Linux based IoT (Internet of Things) module that consumes sensor data from a vehicle, messages from the vehicle CAN bus and location data in real time. That same module filters and transforms the data into human readable messages. Many of the messages are logged on the module and many are uploaded to a web portal. That’s already a lot of moving parts, but the data upload could happen over a WiFi connection or a cellular connection. If communication is interrupted the IoT module needs to keep track of which messages haven’t been uploaded and then transmit them when communication with the cloud is reestablished. What happens if the available storage on the module fills up? What if the customer decides to load new firmware on the module and there isn’t enough space? How well does the module handle intermittent cellular communication, like when the vehicle passes through a tunnel? Now the big question – how do we test those types of scenarios in an automated fashion? In addition to moving data to the portal there are also custom applications running on the IoT module that are performing edge computing and serving web pages. This could cause CPU loading spikes, I/O bottlenecks, or high memory consumption. We might see performance degradation when we interact with the module, but with proper automated tests, engineering could receive notifications or log files could get saved to a safe location before their overwritten. Today many of the tests that verify the performance of the IoT module are manual. The tests that are automated typically run a couple weeks before a software release, but not continuously. If you are passionate about software quality and you feel you have the aptitude and experience to drive automated testing forward with us, we are excited to talk with you! ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: Define and implement test automation for IoT (telematics) and embedded devices - 55% of Total Time Collaborate in requirements reviews and design reviews and assistance with test plan development - 25% of Total Time Identify (defining severity and priority), track, and close software defects - 10% of Total Time Report quality metrics - 10% of Total Time CORE COMPETENCIES: Required: Experience improving Continuous Test environments (on hardware and/or software simulations) Experience creating and executing automated regression, integration, characteristic tests, stress tests with IoT products Develop test cases based on requirements and design documentation Familiar with revision control (Git preferred), requirements, and bug tracking software (Azure DevOps preferred) Highly organized with strong attention to detail and good problem solving skills Good verbal and written communication skills Ability to collaborate with and influence cross-functional teams (marketing, engineering, sales) Ability to work on and complete varying tasks in a timely manner Preferred: Familiarity with cloud-based testing to simulate real-world environments Most testing should be black box testing (based on designs), but experience developing test cases based on an understanding of source code is a useful skill. Experience with Linux administration and console Experience in usability testing (Did the feature meet user-centered acceptance criteria?) Ability to setup and utilize common test equipment (e.g. power supplies, multimeters, oscilloscopes, etc.) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: BS in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar Experience and/or Training: 3+ years of relevant experience (1+ in software test or similar role) Licenses/Certificates: None (CSQE certification a plus) Technology/Equipment: Proficiency in a common programming language (e.g. C, C++, C#, Python, etc) PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and/or hear, and/or use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand, and/or walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds while moving files or small packages. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The mental and physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. An individual in this position must be able to successfully perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position. The above list reflects the general details necessary to describe the principle and essential functions of the position and shall not be construed as the only duties that may be assigned for the position. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in an office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Infrequent travel to a customer’s location may be required. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an individual encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. Company Description HED is offering an exciting opportunity to join a growth-oriented small business with a growing product offering in the heavy-duty vehicle market. HED started over 30 years ago by working with leading OEMs to help design their vehicle systems using CAN controller networks and in recent years expanded our portfolio to include CAN Keypads, Displays, and Telematics and services.
