GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
Individual is responsible for developing and providing technical training and instruction to VIA Fleet and Facilities personnel with the objective of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the VIA maintenance program through employee skills and knowledge enhancement. The training and instruction to be performed will range in scope from general discussions of vehicle and facility maintenance procedures to very detailed instruction in the operation, diagnostics and repair of highly complex vehicle and facility systems. The student audience will range from unskilled labor to highly skilled and experienced technicians. Trainer will act as a Lead to the students during training sessions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Develops, coordinates, and presents training for employees enrolled in the Targeted Maintenance Training Program.
Develops, coordinates, and presents technical training to address specific maintenance issues identified as affecting program efficiency and effectiveness.
Develops, coordinates, and presents the curriculum for newly hired maintenance personnel.
Acts as lead to students during training sessions reviewing attendance, monitoring, and documenting performance, and evaluating skill and knowledge retention.
Communicates maintenance procedures and associated technical information to personnel of all skill levels throughout the Fleet and Facilities Division with the objective of optimizing student comprehension and improving equipment reliability.
Prepares and performs presentations of maintenance related research, analysis, findings, and procedures.
Performs quality inspections of maintenance operations to validate effective skills and knowledge transfer.
Works with Fleet and Facilities management to assess employee knowledge and skill levels and develops curriculum to meet the training needs.
Conducts comprehensive written and practical, hands on, assessments of student knowledge and ability.
Effectively sources technical information necessary for the development of curriculums and the production of learning materials to maximize the benefits of training.
Assists in the development, documentation, and cataloging of detailed and easily understood vehicle maintenance procedures in a standardized format for dissemination to all.
Assists in the development, coordination, and maintenance of employee training records including lesson plans, syllabuses, curriculum, student assessments, and student attendance sheets.
Research maintenance related technical issues and supports maintenance program improvement initiatives.
Initiates and coordinates equipment manufacturer and contractor provided training for Fleet and Facilities personnel as requested.
Assists in the coordination of in-house provided maintenance training with the Training and Development Department.
Confers with maintenance staff on maintenance issues.
This job description excludes marginal functions that are incidental to performing the job. Other duties may exist.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Training and Development, Human Relations and Business, Education, Project Management, Automotive Technology, or related field. Five (5) years progressive experience as a transit or heavy equipment mechanic, lead, or supervisor. An equivalent combination education and/or experience may be considered.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be ASE Certified in all Transit Bus categories within two (2) years of employment, regardless of education and experience combination at time of employment. Certification to include but limited to:
· Compressed Natural Gas Engines (Test H1)
· Diesel Engines Test (Test H2)
· Drive Train (Test H3)
· Brakes (Test H4)
· Suspension and Steering (Test H5)
· Electrical/Electronic Systems (Test H6)
· Heating, Ventilation and A/C Test (Test H7)
· Preventative Maintenance and Inspection Test (Test H8)
Source vehicle operating and repair information using VIA maintenance reporting software systems, manufacturers’ service bulletins, and VIA published SOP’s and technical service bulletins.
Visually evaluate and discern pneumatic, electrical, hydraulic, and general mechanical systems.
Read electrical and hydraulic diagrams.
Process highly technical information with strong deductive thinking and reasoning skills.
Obtain additional certifications and qualifications as they are developed in addition to current requirements.
Must have a thorough knowledge of transit vehicle operating systems to include wheelchair lifts, destination signs, climate control, electrical systems, brake systems, and passenger doors.
Thorough knowledge of transit vehicle maintenance and servicing procedures.
Familiar with the properties of materials, supplies, fuels and lubricants common to transit vehicles.
Proficient technical writing and creating logic diagram skills.
Experience speaking in a group setting to clearly communicate technical information.
Evaluate technical skills of vehicle maintenance personnel using maintenance reporting system information, direct observation and interviews, test information, and quality inspections of work performed.
Excellent writing and speaking communication skills.
Sufficient color vision to identify colors of electrical wires used in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and related equipment. These colors primarily include: red, blue, yellow, orange, green, purple, black, white, brown, grey, tan and pink.
Lead classroom instructions keeping students engaged and productive during classes.
Must have considerable knowledge and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, related software, and frequently use these software tools to produce highly effective visual aids for training purposes.
Working knowledge of mathematics through college algebra and thorough knowledge of measuring nomenclature used in machinery and component parts.
Work within established timelines with general supervision.
Establish effective working relationships with employees throughout the VIA organization.
Work evening hours when necessary and respond to situations at non-traditional office hours and on weekends if needed.
Occasionally travel to manufacturing and supplier locations.
Occasionally push or pull objects weighing as much as 80 Ibs.
Occasionally lift and carry objects weighing as much as 30 Ibs.
Must be able to maintain good work attendance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Physical ability to occasionally bend, stoop, twist, squat, kneel, climb stairs, reach, and be on unprotected heights.
Requires forearm rotational movement, hard grasping and use of foot controls.
Must be able to frequently walk, sit, stand, be around moving machinery, extremes in temperature/humidity, exposure to dust, fumes and gas, exposure to noise.
Requires simple grasping, fine manipulation, and medium dexterity.
Must have the physical ability to occasionally push/pull 50 lbs. and lift/carry 30 lbs.
Job requires the use of both hands simultaneously or singly.
Job requires the use of both feet for foot controls simultaneously or singly.
Must be able to hear safety and emergency horns.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work involves exposure to dust, fumes, gases, noise and unfavorable weather conditions.
Work also involves meetings and presentations held in office type environments.
