Overview 

As a Fire Safety Technician, you will be responsible for completing inspections, compliance procedures and firestopping techniques on fire rated doors, dampers and fire walls according to the National Fire Protection Agency (NPFA) 80 regulations. 

  

This specialized position works in all aspects of Fire Safety within all kinds of indoor and outdoor climates, usually in and around dust working on systems designed and tested as a component of the life safety industry. 

  

Fire Door & Damper Inspections Role 

· Inspection of fire dampers, fire rated and smoke doors per NFPA 80 statutes and codes 

· Successfully complete FDS’ training for Fire Damper and Door Inspection as outlined in FDS’ TMP-001 manual and in accordance with FDS’ ISO 17020:2012 certification requirements. 

· Comply with applicable ISO 17020 policies and procedures 

· Provide accurate and complete documentation for customer’s code compliance and reporting 

· Maintain professional and timely communication with customers and FDS management and staff before and after engagement 

· Ability to interpret Life Safety drawings and work through a facility self-directed 

  

Fire Door Compliance Role 

· Perform minor repair of fire door frames, doors, locksets, latches, closers, strike plates, miscellaneous door and frame hardware and material to bring up to code requirements 

· Perform minor repair of fire door frames, doors, locksets, latches, closers, strike plates, miscellaneous door and frame hardware and material to bring up to code requirements following ordinance with NFPA 80, NFPA 105 and the IBC standards for fire door performance. 

· Filling holes in fire door frames/doors 

· Shimming fire doors to correct clearances 

· Cleaning/installing closers and hardware to fix latching and closing issues 

· Establish plan of action for door replacement through facilities in a time efficient manner 

· Order and install fire door hardware, fire doors and related equipment 

· Document repairs that can’t be completed, obtain and record specifications for hardware to be ordered 

· Ability to complete on-site emergency troubleshooting 

· Provide accurate and complete documentation for customer’s code compliance and reporting 

· Maintain professional and timely communication with customers and FDS management and staff before and after engagement 

· Ability to interpret Life Safety drawings and work through a facility self-directed 

· Attention to detail. Installations must be done in a professional manner and left in a condition ready to receive final owner finishes 

· Knowledge and familiarity working with carpenter hand tools (drill, screws, screw driver, tap & dye sets, bondo, sander, etc.) along with proper maintenance of tools and equipment
  

 

Fire Stopping Role 

· Perform fire stop and smoke stop services per NFPA 80, NFPA 105 and the IBC standards ensuring adequate installation of materials 

· Complete prep work for applications along with unloading and loading of application materials 

· Knowledge and familiarity working with carpentry hand tools (drill, screws, screw driver, knives, scissors, saws, and staple gun, etc.) to install firestop material along with proper maintenance of tools and equipment 

· Document repairs that can’t be completed, obtain and record specifications for materials to be ordered 

· Provide accurate and complete documentation for customer’s code compliance and reporting 

· Maintain professional and timely communication with customers and FDS management and staff before and after engagement 

· Ability to interpret Life Safety drawings and work through a facility self-directed 

  

Requirements 

· Successfully complete OJT and online Phase I & II Fire Door Repair Technician training within 90 days of hiring and before performing repairs by themselves 

· Successfully obtain Fire Door Inspector certification through IFDIA and/or DHI within 90 days of hiring and before performing inspections by themselves 

· Successfully complete Fire Door and Damper Inspector approval through FDS OJT Program within 90 

· Thorough understanding of NFPA 80 as it relates to fire inspections 

· Thorough understanding of NFPA 80, NFPA 105 and the IBC standards for fire door performance 

· Successfully complete Firestopping approval through FDS OJT Program within 90 days of hiring and before performing inspections by themselves 

· Demonstrate proper use of the FDS LSAS Application 

· Demonstrate ability to follow inspection methods and procedures, recognizing and recording deficiencies 

· Demonstrate knowledge and use of tools along with maintenance and calibration requirements 

· Maintaining strict accountability of all equipment and tools 

· Demonstrate ability to review inspection reports and approve for client distribution 

· Attention to detail. Installations, Compliance procedures and Inspections must be done in a professional manner and left in a condition ready to receive final owner finishes 

· Maintain professional, timely, communication with customers 

· Excellent client-facing and internal communication skills 

· Excellent written/verbal communication and organizational/attention to detail skills 

· Ability to cross train in all other departments of the company including Fire Door Inspections, Fire Damper, Fire Door and Damper Compliance and Firestopping 

· Self-starter, excellent listener and completes tasks independently and efficiently with limited direction 

· Good record keeping and tracking of facilities repair work 

· Professional appearance 

· Administer proper infectious control measures per hospital requirements 

· Efficient with smartphones, tablets, computers, & Microsoft Office for reporting daily progress to Operations Support 

· Ability to interpret Life Safety drawings and work through a facility self-directed
  

· Extensive experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Calendar 

· Must be able to attend job trainings as required 

· Must be able to work overtime as required 

· Extensive travel is required (up to 100% paid travel, per diem, hotel, airfare and rental cars) 

· Must live within 1 hour of a major airport 

  

Additional Requirements 

· Must be 21 years of age 

· Must have valid driver license 

· Must pass drug screen, criminal background check & receive required inoculations (flu/hepatitis or others as required) 

· Must be willing to submit to TB test, vaccination blood tests, & vaccinations when required by client (MMR, Flu, Varicella, etc.)

· Working extended hours, including evenings and weekends are required.
