Job Description

The Dean of Math/Science reports directly to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and is responsible for administering a number of academic programs areas.  The Dean is responsible for hiring, supervising and evaluating approximately 30-45 full-time faculty members and support staff, as well as approximately 35 adjunct faculty, and will provide oversight for the overall department and program budgets.

  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of the department's goals and priorities and monitor their achievement.
  • Direct the preparation of the annual budget for department and supervise its implementation.
  • Recommend staff for appointment, assignment, and other personnel actions.
  • Supervise and evaluate the faculty and staff, coordinate departmental staff development programs and activities, and provide for the orientation of new employees, communicate administrative policies and actions to the faculty.
  • Collaborate with other deans in the Liberal Arts program to promote the program, meet program goals, and complete the program review process.
  • Coordinate the preparation and submission of all reports and studies that are required from the department.
  • Assist in providing for proper facilities, equipment and materials to meet the needs of the instructional programs.
  • Maintain contacts with area high schools and colleges, appropriate businesses, agencies, and community organizations and individuals in the College's service area.
  • Coordinate the evaluation and revision of current courses and programs within the department.
  • Cooperate with other departments and divisions of the College in student recruitment, guidance, placement and follow-up, informing the public of the College's programs and services.
  • Develop class schedules and make full-time and adjunct faculty assignments.
  • Resolve student concerns and requests (e.g. conflicts, exemptions, waivers, recommendations, and transfer articulation questions).
  • Assist in advising and registration activities.
  • Maintain course syllabi for all courses within departments.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a field related to one or more of the discipline areas of responsibility or in administration required.
  • Five years teaching experience or administrative work experience related to one or more of the discipline areas required of which two years must have been at the postsecondary level.
  • Must have demonstrated educational leadership ability and possess knowledge of trends and issues related to community college education.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree in a field related to one or more of the discipline areas of responsibility or in administration preferred.
  • Previous experience in curriculum development preferred.
  • Community college teaching experience or administrative experience preferred.
