McClatchy is seeking a collaborative, audience-focused reporter for our South Carolina service journalism team, whose mission is to help local readers navigate life and the news. The reporter will be based in Hilton Head, a coastal city with a blend of residential communities and tourist attractions that is known for its beautiful beaches.  The service journalism team focuses on listening to and serving our local readers with need-to-know information in an accessible approach that includes news explainers, Q&As and fact checks.  We dig into local curiosities and issues, and we follow local interests on online engagement sites like Nextdoor and Reddit, as well as Google Trends. Topic areas could include covering restaurant openings, crazy critters showing up on the beach, tourism, weather or even reports on celebrity visits to the island.
